Harper Hallam: Lived in and Loved in

Here's a jewelry line with pieces that are meant to be worn, lived in, and loved in: Harper Hallam.  The effortlessly cool pieces in the Harper Hallam collection are designed by Rebecca Hallam, who fuses her Mexican culture with couture style.  Each piece is made from the finest natural elements like diamonds and gemstones juxtaposed with elegant 24k gold.  Each piece is timeless because Rebecca is not one to follow trends.  While living in San Miguel De Allende for a summer, Rebecca had some of her grandmother's old jewelry remade so that all of the girls in her family could have pieces.  She got so much enjoyment out of discussing options with the jeweler that she even designed a few of her own pieces.  When she returned to Dallas everyone wanted to know where she got them and a few years later Harper Hallam was started.  Of course, Dallas was the perfect place to launch her line because Dallas women are "the chicest, most gorgeous women" according to Rebecca.  Even people in LA "can always spot a Dallas girl."
"I just think Dallas women exude confidence, cosmopolitan but in boots. Dallas women pay close attention to styling detail and it shows."
As a business owner and designer, Rebecca has some great advice to offer those of us who aspire to work in fashion.  "Be willing to do every job," says Rebecca.  You can't start your own business with a big ego and you have to know who to hire.  "I am keenly aware of what I am not good at," and Rebecca knows what kind of talent she needs to fill those gaps.
Blouse by Shirin Askari

Rebecca describes her own style as moody and versatile.  Her current style crush is Blake Lively, who balances feminine and flirty with a sexy edge.  She also finds inspiration in real people every day.  One of her recent discoveries was a gorgeous woman with a scarf on her head and a stack of gold bracelets.  I really like how you can mix and layer Harper Hallam pieces for a different look every day.  You rarely hear about designers who are inspired by real people, which is really cool.  I think that's because Harper Hallam jewelry is meant to be worn.

Shirin Askari - Project Runway to This Chic is Bananas!

"Chic" Tee
I've been a dedicated Project Runway fan since the age of 11.  After seeing every episode for the past 10 years, I've developed a few favorite designers that have really blown me away with their talent.  Luckily one of my favorite Project Runway designers is based right here in Dallas.  Shirin Askari began designing several years before her Project Runway season 6 debut in 2009.  After sharing her designs on national TV, Shirin moved to New York to design and sell her line of contemporary clothing, evening dresses, and custom bridal.  Her gorgeous new RTW line ASKARI launched in January, and it really is to die for!  I couldn't believe when I saw the price tags - couture quality for a moderate price.

Shirin isn't just remembered from Project Runway because of her talent.  Although I've never met her in person (I hope to meet her one day!), I got the opportunity to ask her some questions over email.  Her likable personality and love of fashion were evident through her responses.  Her energy almost radiated through the computer!  She describes her style as "feminine and edgy."  As a lover of Dallas style, Shirin likes that it's a city where women "go out of their way to dress up," no matter the occasion!  Her classic style icons are both Hepburns: Katharine and Audrey.  Victoria Beckham, Blake Lively, and Miranda Kerr are some of the current day stylish women that inspire her.  But she doesn't like to stick to just one fashion icon, which is just like me!
"Persistence and hard work is key.  Also - never stop learning and improving your skills."
- Shirin's advice to those aspiring to work in fashion
"Parker" top
"Brooke" dress
My friend and PR expert Bri Crum let me borrow some of the cutest pieces from the ASKARI spring 2014 collection.  My favorite is the "Brooke" dress, which my friend Elizabeth West models above.  Each outfit that Shirin designs is unique and interesting.  An ASKARI dress or top doesn't look the same from every angle.  She always adds some interest to her clothes.  Last summer, Shirin styled a collection of outfits for me from Front Door Fashion.  She put things together that I would have never thought of, and that was cool to see.  The same goes for her own designs.  To see more, check out Shirin Askari's website to view the spring 2014 collection as well as the brand-new fall/winter 2014 collection.  Let me tell you, this chic really is bananas!

Katydid Collection: Dallas Fashion Line Offers Perfect Prints

From edgy to chic, Dallas-based Katydid Collection offers eye-catching fashions and accessories that are oh so appealing.  I was recently introduced to Katydid by lifestyle blogger Cynthia Smoot, and I'm so glad to have discovered this fashion sensation.  The line's designer and true Texan, Katy Messersmith, turned her creativity and entrepreneurial spark into a multi-million dollar business.  Katydid Collection also supports charities including Dress for Success, Susan G. Komen, and Kidd's Kids.  So the clothes aren't all that makes Katydid inspiring.

My favorite part about Katydid is COLOR!  Katydid is a breath of fresh air in a sea of so many designers that choose a more neutral palette.  A mix of colors, prints, and cultural influences, Katydid's cute and effortless pieces can be worn in lots of different ways.  Each piece is carefully designed in Dallas and made in the USA.  I tested out three of Katydid's most popular summer styles and am thrilled to show you how I rock Katydid.

Moroccan Shorts: These shorts are definitely a must-have.  With a range of colors imbedded in the versatile print, it isn't hard to find a top to match the shorts.  I found that they are really flattering and they have pockets!  They were a little short for me, but this shouldn't be a concern for most.  The print will always be in style, so when you buy a pair now, you can wear it for the rest of this summer and next summer too.  Click here to purchase the Moroccan Shorts!
Aztec Texas Tank: This is an easy-breezy top that every Texas girl should own.  The oversized Texas patch on the tank has an edgy print and crystals to add some dimension.  I like the black one because it goes with everything, but it also comes in other colors.  Click here to purchase the Aztec Texas Tank!
Printed Tank:  The vibrant color combination makes this blouse really appealing.  Normally a mainly pink girl, I was a little hesitant about trying out turquoise.  Just like the shorts, the print includes lots of colors, including pink.  So it looks awesome paired with pink!  I recommend buying a size down on this one because it's really flowy and runs a little big.  Click here to purchase the Printed Tank!

Purchase Katydid Collection online or in a boutique near you.  Over 10,000 stores around the country sell Katydid.

The Blaine's Dallas Salon Experience

When my skin is pasty and my hair is a mess, now I trust Blaine's Dallas to glam me up.  I recently visited the chic McKinney Avenue salon in Uptown for a blowout and spray tan.  Owner Blaine Schlaudt has been making Dallas more beautiful for the past 18 years, and has been a hair expert for almost 30 years.  He not only did a fabulous job on my hair, he was also sweet and easy to talk to.  I can say the same for his wife Sharon, who co-operates the salon and does killer spray tans.  All of the Blaine's associates that I met are professional but also very FRIENDLY, which is essential for me to have a positive salon experience.
I was impressed to find that the service pricing at Blaine's is competitive, and in several cases substantially better than other salons in Dallas.  The space is also more modern and comfortable than any other place I've tried in the past.  Plus, Blaine's is conveniently a full-service salon.  Besides nails, they do everything you need and more.  Getting ready for a big event, or primping just for fun, is less stressful when you only have to go to one place.  You can even buy Blaine's hair products to treat your hair, Blaine's-style, at home.  My favorite product from the line is the dry shampoo, which I used to keep my blowout looking good the next day.
When you go to Blaine's, you'll receive exceptional customer service.  When you arrive, just leave your car in the front and someone will park it for you... sweet!  I was also offered water or a mimosa while being kindly greeted by the lovely Brittany.  My blowout lasted until the day after and looked even better with Blaine's dry shampoo.  The spray tan lasted 7-10 days and faded off evenly, just like Sharon said it would.  When I left, I couldn't stop smiling.  Blaine made my bad hair day a good one and I know he'll do the same for you too!  Find out more information on the Blaine's Dallas website.

Fall Fashion 2014: Wear Now AND Later!

Lately, wardrobe versatility has been on my mind when I shop.  My main concern: Is this item worth the investment so I can wear it across seasons?  Now's the time to phase out of summer and start falling for fashions that be worn now through the fall and winter.  Prices on Nordstrom Anniversary Sale merchandise are going up on August 4.  The Anniversary pieces shown below are Small 4 Style's top versatile picks.  Hover over the photo and click on the item you'd like to learn more about.  Happy shopping!

Galleria Dallas Runway Revue 2014

Having worked at the Galleria Dallas for the past several years at Nordstrom, I always enjoyed the energy that tax-free weekend brought each August.  Galleria Dallas will host its annual Runway Revue on August 9 just in time for back-to-school shopping.  Galleria Dallas stylist Holly Quartaro will lead four fashion shows that will definitely inspire your fall wardrobe.  After the show, visit some of the over 200 stores at the Galleria.
 Noon - Kid's Show
2:00 - Trend Show
4:00 - Tax-Free Show
6:00 - Toni & Guy Hair Show
Tax-free weekend is August 8-10.  This would have been my fifth summer working at Nordstrom if it hadn't been for my intermediate accounting classes.  Plus, I'll be out of town for this event.  Trust me, I wouldn't miss a Galleria Dallas event unless it was a good reason.   Have fun and happy tax-free shopping!
