Manicure Mania

For the past year, I've been obsessed with Sally Hansen's Salon Effects nail stickers.  The one I'm wearing is the "Prep's Cool" style.  It got me tons of compliments while working at Nordstrom in December.  At least 5 people a day would say, "how did you do that?" or "where did you get your nails done like that?"  Trust me, stylistas, people will be amazed at how perfectly you painted detailed patterns on your nails with these stickers!  And for only $10  $7.20 a pack (right now they are on sale here) they're a better value than a manicure.

GotCha! Bobby Bartels

SMU student Bobby Bartels caught my eye with his effortlessly stylish striped sweater.  I really appreciate a man who has a natural sense of style!  As you stylistas know, I ask everyone who I feature on my blog 3 questions: Who is your style-icon?  Describe your style in 2 words.  What is your favorite store in Dallas?  When I asked Bobby if he had a style-icon, he said, "Sorry I don't know what that is."  Too funny!  But he did have an answer for my other 2 questions...

Ask Alex: Print Extravaganza!

Elizabeth from Houston, TX has a question for the Stylista!
Mixing patterns and textures seems to be so popular in the spring, but how can i do it without looking disorganized?
Your number one fan,
Elizabeth
I'm loving mixed prints for spring too!  When mixing prints, it's really important that you have balance.  Mix a big print with a smaller one, or a loud print with a more subtle one.  To pull the look together, try to match similar colors in both prints.  My favorite prints are polka dots and stripes, because you can pair them with almost anything.  And be creative with your accessories.  But make sure to have fun with it because every Stylista has their own fabulous style!  Check out these 3 mixed print outfit ideas!

Small 4 Style Interviews Taylor Miller of Hazen Jewelry

Taylor Miller
Taylor Miller may seem like a regular 18-year-old college freshman.  Outside school, she’s a nationally-known jewelry designer and owner of her own business, Hazen Jewelry.  In 2002 at the age of 9, Taylor started Hazen Jewelry with ambition and determination.  She would take her great grandmother’s old necklaces apart and restring them on dental floss.  After begging her mom to wear one of her designs out, a prominent Houston boutique owner complimented Taylor’s design and that was the beginning of Hazen Jewelry!  Her savings from birthdays and Christmases went into buying beads, which she would spread out on the floor and start creating beautiful, classic jewelry.  All the moms at her brother’s baseball games would buy her inventory and within 6 months, a store started carrying her line.  She’s been going to the Atlanta Market twice a year to sell her line to store owners.  Taylor says, “It’s been a neat environment to learn in and grow in.”

Never being one to look at magazines for trends, Taylor “take[s] inspiration from nature totally unintentionally.”  A natural trendsetter, she gravitates toward textures, colors, and shapes she likes, which always seem to be what’s in style.

As a college student, Taylor says that managing Hazen Jewelry “can be very challenging.”  Her business is her creative outlet.  “I’m happy when I do it, it’s definitely worth it in the long run,” Taylor says.  All her supplies and inventory are in Houston while she is at SMU in Dallas, but this spring and summer, she plans on creating an office space in Dallas so she can run her business more easily.  Saint Michael’s Woman’s Exchange in Highland Park Village in Dallas recently started carrying Hazen Jewelry.

As a wise, business-savvy professional, Taylor has some great advice for those who want to start their own business.  She stressed, “You definitely have to be ready to commit because nothing happens overnight.”  She adds that she always “strives for a new level of professionalism.”  Taylor admits that running a business can be challenging and frustrating at times, but if it’s something you’re passionate about, “you’re going to really put your heart and soul in it, and the rewards will outweigh the hardships.”

This year is Hazen Jewelry’s tenth anniversary.   2012 is the year to “celebrate how blessed I’ve been to be able to do this,” says Taylor.  Taylor is working on a new concept of breaking up her line into two collections: a high end luxury line and a trendy everyday line.  The high end line is “glamorous and chic” and will include fine metals and precious stones as well as one-of-a-kind pieces, all designed and handmade by Taylor.  The trendy everyday line is a “lifestyle line, very Palm Beach-y, resort,” and more accessible.
I’ve been lucky enough to get to know Taylor during our freshman year at SMU.  We both share a love for hard work, networking, and a feminine and classy style.  I’m so inspired by her success and dedication to her business, and her jewelry is really outstanding.  Check out more of Taylor’s Hazen Jewelry collection on her website, www.hazenjewelry.com.  Hazen Jewelry is carried at boutiques in several states.  “Like” Hazen Jewelry on Facebook and Follow on Twitter.  Taylor also has a blog, All That Glistens, check it out for gorgeous event photos and fashion trends.

Ask Alex: Denim Dilemma

Elizabeth from Dallas, TX has a denim dilemma!
I have a jean jacket that I bought a while ago, but I never know how to wear it without looking old fashioned! Do you have any suggestions?
Jean jackets are classic and you can wear them with so much!  Cute pants, dresses, and skirts... the possibilities are endless.  Plus, it's a great versatile piece for the spring and fall.  My favorite way to wear a jean jacket this season is to dress-down an outfit, to make it more casual.  Wear a "dressy" outfit with your jacket during the day, take off the jacket at night for the party!  My top 3 suggestions are: girly dresses, white pants, and fun shorts.

 1. Old Navy Jean Jacket
2. Pelle Moda Wedges
3. Pink Bracelet
4.Elie Tahari Blouse
5. Lily Pulitzer Shorts
6. Watercolor Dress
7. Jones New York Sequin Tee-Shirt
8. Lucky Brand White Jeans

Ask Alex: Luxe Leopard

Jessica from Los Angeles, CA has a style question... Alex has the answer!
"I know animal print pants are really in right now.  What can I put with animal print pants so that they're stylish and I don't feel over the top?"
Jessica,
Thank you for the challenge!  Animal print pants can be tricky, but when paired with the right pieces, they can be a lot of fun.  It's all about balancing fierceness and femininity.  These J.Brand leopard jeans look feminine with a peter pan collar shirt.  I love these fashionista flats with bows and spikes.   Top it off with big sunglasses and a faux fur coat, and you will make you look sophisticated without being over the top.

1. J. Brand Leopard Stretch Skinny Jeans
3. Peter Pan Collar Blouse
4. Sam Edelman Beatrix Ballet Flats
