Small 4 Style Meets the FD Luxe Team

September Issue Photo Credit: FD Luxe's Facebook
It doesn't get much better than going to class and hearing from the geniuses behind my favorite Dallas magazine, FD LuxeFD Luxe started as a style section of the Dallas Morning News in 1978 and is now a full-blown magazine.  With quality comparable to Vogue, it is such a treat to peruse the new issue each month to learn about the art, style, and social scenes in Dallas.

Meeting the Editor-in-Chief, Rob Brinkley, was so awesome.  I have been a fan of FD since I was about 12 and have seen all of its evolutions from newspaper to magazine.  For me, meeting the FD team was like meeting celebrities.  I was just as star-struck meeting Mr. Brinkley as  I was meeting and interviewing the former Editor-in-Chief, Tracy Achor Hayes.  I can't wait to see the November issue that is coming out next week!

Small 4 Style Interviews Tracy Achor Hayes

Tracy Achor Hayes, director of editorial content for Neiman Marcus’ The Book will be speaking at the Journalism and Blogging Panel tonight as part of SMU Fashion Week!   Neiman Marcus’ The Book is an online magazine that is exceptional.  So you can imagine how excited I was to talk to Tracy.

Tracy has been interested in fashion for as long as she can remember.  You could say she was even kinda born into the business, both of her grandmothers worked in the fashion industry.  Obviously, fashion runs in her blood.  In junior high, her first job was doing fashion shows and informal modeling as a member of a department store teen board.  After college, she worked in the Neiman Marcus advertising department and spent the bulk of her career, 30 years, at The Dallas Morning News. Before returning to Neiman’s in December 2011, Tracy was the Editor-in-Chief of The Dallas Morning News’ FD Luxe.  I, like most Dallas stylistas, have been reading FD Luxe since its beginning in 2004.  According to Tracy, the April issue will be the unveiling of a big format change, so we can all look forward to seeing that soon! Currently, she is revamping Neiman Marcus’ The Book

Due to her experience and love for fashion, Tracy has some outstanding advice for those who want to work in the industry.  According to her, aspiring industry professionals should “explore because there are so many different ways to be involved in the industry”, while stressing the importance of finding your own niche and keeping your mind open.  Her interns at FD Luxe had the opportunity to work in several different departments, such as photo styling, designing, or retail.  This allowed them to explore various avenues until they found their specialty.  This spring, Tracy is excited about adding color to her wardrobe.  Her style in two words is “bohemian tomboy.”  She loves the way a model dresses, and can’t be confined to one particular style icon, though some of her favorites are Brits such as Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, and Stella Tennant.

Make sure to catch Tracy Achor Hayes at the Journalism and Blogging Panel at SMU Fashion Week.  She’s speaking TONIGHT, Tuesday, March 27 at 6:30 in the Owens Fine Arts Center’s O’Donnell Hall.  I can’t wait!
