Small 4 Style Interviews Merritt Beck of The Style Scribe

Speaking at the Journalism and Blogging Panel at SMU Fashion Week is SMU grad and fashion blogger, Merritt Beck of The Style Scribe.  She's got some great style and career advice to help all of us stylistas!

While attending SMU, Merritt did several fashion-related internships, however when she graduated in 2009, there weren’t many jobs available in the fashion industry.  She took a marketing job where she worked on social media and online marketing.   Merritt says that developing these skills helped her to be a better blogger.  So, in February 2011, Merritt started The Style Scribe anonymously, as a way “to fuel some of my creativity and channel my love for fashion in some way.”  As her blog gained viewership, she decided to “put a face with the brand.”

I absolutely love Merritt’s advice for aspiring fashion professionals.  Merritt says, “There are a lot of people out there that want you to fail.  Do your best to surround yourself with people that will support you and encourage you to keep at it.”  She adds, “It's always helpful to remind yourself that you can't please everybody - once you understand that, not only will you be happier, your career will evolve into something you'd never dreamed it could.”

Merritt describes her style as “fresh but refined.”  When it comes to spring 2012 style, Merritt loves color, and says “neons and pastels will reign supreme this season, so I'm thrilled to add more bold pieces to my wardrobe!”  We Texans get several months of hot weather, so I’m pretty certain Merritt will be getting a lot of wear out of her new bold pieces!  Her style icon is Olivia Palmero because she “literally die[s] for every outfit I see her in.”  As a true fashion fanatic, Merritt says, “I would do some serious damage in that girl's closet.”  That made me laugh!

Make sure to catch Merritt Beck at the Journalism and Blogging Panel at SMU Fashion Week.  She’s speaking Tuesday, March 27 at 6:30 in the Owens Fine Arts Center’s O’Donnell Hall.  You won’t want to miss her!
